A report released yesterday chronicles a decade of sweeping changes to Canada’s immigration policies and their impacts on families in Canada.
The new multimedia site includes personal stories of migrants and refugees, including the above interview with a Mexican journalist who fled the country following threats of violence in 2008. Karla was granted refugee status, but new rules now exclude refugees from Mexico.
The Never Home project outlines a 30 per cent drop in accepted refugee applications since 2006, as well as a reduction in the services afforded to refugees and immigrants. Many refugees are subject to mandatory incarceration, most don’t receive health benefits, and people from certain areas are barred from even applying. Read more here.
